City & Guilds are not the authorising body for the plumbing industry, they happen to be one of a few certifying bodies, which people are blinded by - they do not hold the key to getting into the plumbing industry. Their plumbing qualifications can be used as a stepping stone. They are not greatly suited to the needs of the mature career changer like yourself. They are not a fast-track option to break into the plumbing industry. City and Guilds are not specifically aimed at people over 24.

Lets clear up some points regarding qualifications. With the demise of the City & Guilds 6988 at the end of 2004 those entering the plumbing trade from other careers will struggle to find a clear and time-efficient path to enter the industry. Plumbing Career Skills has decided to tackle the problem facing the mature career changer head-on.

In response to City & Guilds decision to end the 6988, we have taken the initiative to develop an intensive plumbing course that has recently obtained the Western Region National Open College Network (WROCN) accreditation. The course was developed by us and our training partners with the aid of qualified plumbers with many years experience in the industry and greatly updated and added to the current curriculum offered under the City & Guilds plumbing course. The WROCN is the UK's foremost provider of accreditation services for adult learning. The WROCN qualifications have been developed to go into more depth than other qualifications.

Our dynamic and proactive approach means we are the only training organisation focusing on the mature career changer offering an intensive plumbing course with a recognised accreditation. There are other training providers offering courses such as the C&G 6032, but as anyone in the industry knows, these certificates do not offer the breadth and depth of training to add real value to most employers or become self-employed. This is why we are offering the new industry standard training and assessments in association with the WROCN. This addresses the needs you have as a mature career changer trying to break into the industry or setup your own business.

Designing the course and undergoing accreditation from the WROCN has taken many months of hard work. The fact that our course and training partners have this accreditation means we have gone through a rigorous testing and validation period. Our WROCN accreditation gives those looking to train with us the confidence in knowledge that we deliver high quality and high job standard career programmes.

Certificates that come from a company, for example "The Certificate in Plumbing" from Training Company X, are worthless. It's like buying an online degree as opposed to going to university.

The Truth About NVQ Levels 2 & 3

Also with regards to the NVQ levels 2 and 3, you cannot achieve these qualifications in the space of just a few weeks. You need to build up a portfolio of work and have onsite assessments by an independent assessor. Each of these NVQ's could take around 9 months each to complete. We will teach you everything you need to know to get these qualifications and will help you build a portfolio of work and give you credits towards these plumbing qualifications.
