The plumbing skills shortage is massive
According to the Institute of Plumbers there are over 30,000 unfilled vacancies for plumbers and this is growing rapidly.
The skills shortage will continue to grow
With house building at its lowest level for over 100 years as this increases the plumbing skills shortages will further increase. The British Plumbing Employer's Council estimates that 29,000 new plumbers will be needed over the next 5 years (as featured in the Guardian 8 November 2003 and on BBC1 June 2004).
The average age of plumbers is quite high and this means that more are leaving the industry than joining it. Colleges are estimated to only have about 3,000 trainee vacancies per annum of which it is estimated only 50% actually go on to work as plumbers.
