Plumbing Training Courses

Training to become a plumber has historically only been open to school leavers (16 - 24 year olds) through on the job plumbing training and day release college plumbing courses leading to vocational plumbing qualifications. These take from 2 to 5 years to complete and wages during the training are generally very low.

Finding a plumbing firm to train a school leaver has also proved very problematic. Most plumbers tend to be sole traders who can't offer the level of training required. Firms that can offer the required skilled plumbing training tend to be adverse to training staff who, generally, once qualified will leave and set-up in competition with their trainer!

Plumbing courses are generally not flexible requiring a weekday per week time off work or the attendance of night courses with set times that can't be missed.

Only a few years ago, if you were over 25 years old you would have had no chance to become a plumber as no college or employer would look at you. Your only option then would have been to pay £20,000 plus to buy a plumbing franchise.
